CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 22-year-old man identified as Nathan G. Gudeman died from stab wounds on W. Healey St near Fair St shortly after midnight on March 22, and police later arrested 23-year-old Alex Muanambta—facing charges of First-Degree Murder and Attempted Murder—for attacking Gudeman and injuring a 22-year-old woman who remains in critical condition. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Federal funding cuts at the CDC and USDA have resulted in layoffs that environmental professors at the University of Urbana-Champaign say risk a lasting gap in research during a high virus season—professors O’Keefe and Wards warned that these job losses may slow future vaccine trials and other critical science efforts. - ➤ Eleven early voting locations opened across Champaign County on Monday as residents prepare for the April 1 General Election. In Mahomet, current trustee Jason Tompkins is the sole candidate for village president and plans to boost commercial growth and expand schools—he will be sworn in on April 29. WCIA
- ➤ Governor JB Pritzker signed a law that stops nursing homes from punishing residents who speak up for their rights—workers must be trained to explain how residents can file a complaint and facilities that retaliate may face civil lawsuits. The law will take effect at the start of next year. WCIA
