COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Albany Road, a movie filmed in Central Illinois, will be shown again at the AMC Theater tomorrow at 10 a.m.—tickets cost $20 including popcorn and a drink, with proceeds aiding African American communities led by Jack and Jill Incorporated.  WCIA

CRIME NEWS

  • Champaign police charged 22-year-old Corey Butler with first-degree murder in connection to a deadly shooting last July on Cynthia and Anita Drives that killed 18-year-olds George Dorris-Rodgers and Daniyjah Staple; the investigation remains open as officers follow new leads.  WCIA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Passover will begin on the evening of April 12 with family seders to mark an eight-day celebration of freedom in Champaign-Urbana—communities are hosting seders at Illini Hillel and Illini Chabad—and local stores will offer kosher foods and supplies. The Sinai Temple Gift Shop will host a Passover Showcase on April 6—providing seder plates and haggadot to help residents prepare for the holiday.  ChambanaMoms

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Karl Geissler is running for the Unit 4 School Board and will work to improve communication and restore trust amid recent controversies as voters will cast ballots on April 1 — his campaign focuses on school safety and policy issues like the anti-racism initiative.  WICS
  • Ronald Baker is running for the Unit 4 school board to improve communication between board members, parents, teachers and students ahead of the April 1 election. He aims to restore trust by addressing school safety concerns and reviewing key policies — a stance that reflects community expectations.  WICS
  • The University is creating a new Division of Parks and Natural Spaces to manage Allerton Park and Retreat Center and the University Arboretum in Urbana, moving the arboretum under direct campus control after 20 years of outside stewardship. Derek Peterson, the current Allerton Park Executive Director, will lead the division and build programs that connect these sites to more people in Champaign—supporting recreation, learning, and community well-being.  The Daily Illini

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shaw Brothers will close the westbound lane of Logan Street between Locust Street and Water Street on Monday, March 31 for pavement patching; the lane will reopen on Friday, April 4, weather permitting. Eastbound traffic will be maintained—local property access will remain open during the detour.  City of Champaign

HEALTH NEWS

  • U of I researcher Shelly Zhang leads a team developing a new 3D printed material to help broken bones heal faster—using special stress to aid bone growth. The team is still making and testing prototypes, and the material is not yet used in people—she hopes it will one day help those with fractures while inspiring young women in STEM.  WCIA
