COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Champaign-Urbana has a series of Easter Bunny events scheduled for this spring—pet photo sessions at Market Place Shopping Center on April 7 and 8, an egg hunt at Barber Park on April 12, and additional hunts and photo opportunities at Stephens Family YMCA, Scovill Zoo, Industrial Donut and other locations through April 19. Residents can join these activities to celebrate the season and enjoy community fun.  ChambanaMoms
  • Community leaders have organized a free prom dress giveaway in Champaign-Urbana that offers dresses, shoes and accessories to all and has been coordinated by former recorder Mike Ingram since 2022. Donation drop-offs are accepted at Farren’s, Beads N Botanicals, Fire Doll Studio, Catch My Thrift and Keller Williams while Uniting Pride collects formalwear for a Queer Prom for youth ages 13 to 18 at the University YMCA through May 8 + the prom event is scheduled for May 9.  ChambanaMoms

CRIME NEWS

  • Early Tuesday morning, suspects cut power to the Casey’s General Store in St. Joseph on East Warren Street — breaking in to steal items of unknown value as the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the robbery.  WCIA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fatima Ahmed and Justin Michael Hendrix were elected as Champaign CUSD #4 board members on April 2nd after winning 5,381 votes (30%) and 5,026 votes (28%), beating Roselle Bhosale and Mark Holm in the contest.  WICS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two mayoral candidates in Rantoul await final results as unofficial counts show incumbent Chuck Smith leads trustee Sam Hall by six votes. The final canvass will occur 21 days after Election Day—official details will then be sent to the State Board of Elections for certification.  WCIA
  • Urbana announced that several street closures will begin at 7 p.m. today to support the University of Illinois Engineering Open House by closing West Springfield Avenue between South Wright and South Matthews and North Matthews Avenue between West Springfield and West Green Street. Drivers and pedestrians should use extra care until the streets reopen around 6 p.m. Saturday — Public Works is available for questions.  WCIA
  • Illinois law enforcement reminds drivers to slow down and move over when approaching road work along Interstate 74 and 57, where ramp closures and detours may affect travel. The Illinois Department of Transportation warns that skipping posted speed limits in work zones has led to 12 Scott's law violations last year—one of which resulted in a fatality.  WAND
