BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hotel Royer is now accepting reservations for rooms and event spaces—its owners plan a soft opening on the 16th after receiving final occupancy certification and a public health permit. The hotel still awaits its local liquor license approval—expected at the next city council meeting.  WICS

CRIME NEWS

  • A U of I student was arrested for damaging Foellinger Auditorium on April 8 at 4:04 a.m.—UIPD now seeks tips to help identify two others seen in security footage.  WCIA
  • An Urbana man was sentenced to 50 years in prison for killing his neighbor on July 15th, 2022—he received nearly 1,000 days credit for time already served.  WCIA
  • University of Illinois Police arrested 20-year-old Adam T. Ahmed at Foellinger Auditorium early Tuesday at 4:04 a.m. after he fled when his emergency lights were activated—investigators are asking the community for leads on two other suspects in a vandalism that damaged six columns, the sidewalk, and the entrance doors.  WICS

CULTURE NEWS

  • A historic Champaign theater reopens after months of renovations, hosting a soft opening on Monday that showed the PG-13 thriller Drop to about 250 guests. The Virginia Theatre now features updated tech to support local productions and upcoming events—such as the Ebertfest film festival later this month.  WCIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday night, state representatives passed House Bill 1085, which sets minimum reimbursement rates to improve access to mental health and substance use treatment. The bill passed with a vote (72 to 33) and now moves to the Senate for further review.  WAND
  • Thomasboro officials said they have received many calls about crashes along U.S. 45 and the Illinois Department of Transportation is planning to add J-turn intersections at Flatville Road and Leverett Road next summer (a $5.7 million project) to improve safety. Some community members support the change while others worry about property impacts.  WCIA
