COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On April 10, Champaign Police joined McKinley Health Center at the University of Illinois campus to share scam safety tips with event attendees. Assistant to the Police Chief Joe Lamberson urged participants to check their accounts regularly — a measure to help catch fraudulent calls, emails, and transactions.  City of Champaign

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two Champaign restaurants, Sun Singer and Suzu's Bakery, faced chargebacks when customers disputed payments for completed online orders, causing fees and lost revenue. One restaurant ended online ordering and delivery while both continue to contest the charges — they also contacted the police for help.  WCIA

CRIME NEWS

  • A 40-year-old woman was arrested on aggravated DUI and DUI—drugs charges after a crash on March 13th at the intersection of Philo Road and Colorado Avenue that killed a 2-month-old baby and injured others—she now awaits a detention hearing at Champaign County Jail.  WAND

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Centennial High School sophomore Angel Walker won the Youth of the Year award at a Thursday night event that raised funds for the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club—she has been a club member since age six and will represent the club at a regional conference in Chicago.  WCIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 10, the Illinois House passed House Bill 2466 that lets former and current inmates get MAP grant funding for college — a measure estimated to cost the state $3.2 million next fiscal year. The bill now moves to the Senate for further review.  WAND
  • Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler participated in a panel titled (Empowering Empathy) at the Grainger School of Engineering on April 10 to discuss how law enforcement can better understand community needs. Equity and Engagement staff were present (Director Rachel Joy and Community Relations Manager Jorge Elvir) to add their views.  City of Champaign
  • At a Thursday night meeting, the board approved a design contract to build between eight and ten new pickleball courts at the John Street Pickleball Complex—adding a new pavilion and restroom facility—with plans to seek public input later this year. The board also approved an amendment for the All Abilities Hub that will add a bus lane and playground to enhance drop-off safety.  WCIA
  • Shaw Brothers will close the eastbound lane on Washington Street between Second and Third Street for pavement patching starting Monday, April 14. Westbound traffic will continue and eastbound vehicles will follow detours until the lane reopens on Friday, April 18—access to all local properties will remain open.  City of Champaign
  • The City Council will hold its Regular Council Meeting on April 15th at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers in the City Building (102 N. Neil Street) in Champaign. The agenda is available for review and the meeting is open to public participation.  City of Champaign
