COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, the Champaign Park District is selling season pool passes for Sholem Aquatic Center—which cover public swim hours, lap swim, river run/walk and Tiny Tots time—with rates of $42 for youth, $80 for adults and $70 for seniors. Urbana Park District is also on sale with a family pass for Crystal Lake Aquatic Center starting at $175 for families with two or three members; pass prices will increase after April 30.  ChambanaMoms
  • Construction is nearing completion with crews pouring concrete and building a stage at the new plaza at the corner of Neil Street + Main Street in Champaign. The soft launch will take place in May.  WAND

CRIME NEWS

  • Champaign police responded to false reports of a large fight at 12:35 a.m. Sunday morning on the 300 block of North Neil Street—officers found an unruly crowd with open alcohol, no injuries, and no arrests.  WAND
  • Champaign Police investigated shots fired Sunday around 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Redwood Dr. and Bradley Ave that caused damage to vehicles and structures though no injuries were reported.  WCIA
  • Champaign County Police arrested 37 year old Ryan Valencia and 36 year old Joseph Caldwell for burglaries at Casey's General Stores — after a Saturday break-in in Philo and a Sunday alarm call in Thomasboro where one suspect injured an officer — and further investigation led to an Urbana motel room where over $8,000 in stolen items was recovered.  WAND

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Young students from Champaign-Urbana competed in the Illinois Science Olympiad this past weekend at the University of Illinois, where 15-member teams from middle and high schools took part in biology, physics, and chemistry events. Two middle schools and two high schools will advance to the national tournament (held Memorial Day weekend) in Lincoln, Nebraska (as top teams prepare for the next challenge).  WCIA

  • The Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon will take place April 24-26 in Champaign-Urbana — a race that can help runners reach the Boston Marathon qualifying time. Race director Jan Seeley said they need about 400 volunteers to assist before the event.  WAND
