  • On April 23, News, Brews, and Beatz held its 10th live recording at Campbell Hall — titled 'It Takes a Village' — to discuss issues in Champaign Urbana's Black community with panelists including Urbana Police Chief Larry Boone, Superintendent Dr. Sheila Boozer, Reverend Rickey Parks and Joe Stovall, and the event featured a live set by Ryan Byfield.  City of Champaign

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Two years after a deadly dust storm shut down 17 miles of I-55 near Springfield, piling up 84 cars and causing eight deaths, University of Illinois researchers in Litchfield studied the storm’s causes and are urging federal support for soil preservation practices—no-till farming and cover cropping—to help prevent future events.  WCIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Urbana will host an inauguration ceremony on May 3 at 1 p.m. inside Lincoln Square Mall where mayor-elect DeShawn Williams and new city council members will be sworn in + the public is invited to attend + Williams will take office following the council meeting on May 5.  WCIA
  • Social Work Intern Terra Salgado from Equity and Engagement led a language access training for department staff on May 1, focusing on practical strategies to build a more equitably accessible community. The session defined language access, addressed the consequences of inadequate access, and outlined best practices for working with interpreters — underscoring the City’s commitment to meaningful language support.  City of Champaign
  • Mahomet Police Chief Michael Metzler announced he will retire in September after serving since 2011 and upgrading the department’s technology and staffing—village officials have begun the search for a new chief to meet community needs.  WAND
