CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Japan House at the University of Illinois said Tuesday that its founder, Shozo Sato, passed away at 91. He started Japan House in 1975 and taught Japanese arts and culture for decades — his work lasting in the memories of many. WCIA
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students, parents, and teachers are encouraged to ride bikes or walk to school today in Champaign and Urbana—local agencies, including the C‑U Safe Routes to School Project and Mass Transit District, support safer routes and active lifestyles as National Bike Month begins. WCIA
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Champaign County AFSCME members rallied outside the county courthouse at noon Tuesday after more than 120 days without a contract and called for fair wage increases and affordable health insurance. They represented workers from multiple county departments and said contract talks resumed that afternoon. WAND
- ➤ The Champaign Police Department will host events during National Police Week from May 12–18 that honor fallen officers and celebrate employee achievements. It will hold a memorial ceremony on May 13 at West Side Park, an employee awards ceremony on May 14 at the department, and an Open House on May 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. that features tours, demos, and exhibits. - ➤ On May 7, members of the Champaign-Urbana Muslim Action Committee protested outside the City Council building to mark one year of urging the council to end funds linked to genocide. Their petition gathered over 1,700 signatures and support from 47 local organizations, and the group spoke directly to council members during the meeting. WICS

- ➤ Susan Hagel, a University of Illinois alum who earned six Paralympic medals over 20 years, will be inducted into the U.S. Olympic – Paralympic Hall of Fame on July 12 in Colorado Springs.
