COMMUNITY NEWS

  • WEFT, a local radio station, raised over $40,000 through its Power to the Tower fundraiser that began in March to repair its radio tower. The tower is now back at full power and station manager Eric Bohlen said the repairs show how much the community values the station (a sign of strong local support).  WICS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students in Champaign will attend free summer programs offered by Unit Four School District, which plans to serve over 1,000 students by doubling elementary camp enrollment and providing free transportation — free meals. Other central Illinois groups like the YMCA and Boys and Girls Club are also organizing fun, educational experiences with financial aid and grant-funded renovations.  WICS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Illinois lawmakers passed a bipartisan bill on May 20 that bans carbon sequestration projects at sole-source aquifers to protect the Mahomet Aquifer, which supplies nearly one million residents with drinking water. The bill now goes to Governor Pritzker for approval + it establishes a commission to study carbon injection safety amid environmental and manufacturing concerns.  The Daily Illini

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tuesday, the Illinois House passed a bill that directs school districts to update hazmat emergency plans, evacuation procedures, and training while state agencies work closely with local responders. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and Office of Homeland Security (OHS) will develop guidance to help schools handle chemical incidents.  WAND

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors and first responders in Urbana work with ImpactLife at the blood bank to collect and store blood for emergencies such as surgeries, cancer treatments and trauma while the center holds about 180 to 200 units for use in hospitals across the Midwest — officials say faster transfusions help patients recover.  WCIA
