ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire behind Sam’s Club late Monday night when multiple cardboard bales caught fire at 11:15 p.m.—five trucks and a backhoe cleared the bales until crews finished at 1:15 a.m. as officials investigated the cause.  WCIA

CRIME NEWS

  • Champaign police are investigating after evidence of shots fired was found when officers arrived at 1:19 a.m. near Springfield Avenue and Kenwood Road—crowd fights erupted and a vehicle was damaged, with no injuries reported.  WCIA

CULTURE NEWS

  • The third annual Five Cities Baroque Festival is set to run in Champaign from June 15 to June 21 and will feature baroque musicians from Springfield, Champaign-Urbana, Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, and Decatur—founding director Nate Widelitz said audiences can expect touching performances and a few unexpected surprises.  WICS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Urbana School District 116 will offer free breakfast and lunch to children 18 and under and to individuals with state-defined disabilities through its Summer Meal Program running from June to mid-July at various district sites. Meals are served Monday through Thursday with set times and no income or registration requirements.  WICS
  • The Urbana School District will offer free breakfast and lunch to any child under 18 this summer from Monday to Thursday between June 9 and July 2 at several locations including King Elementary and Urbana Middle School—children do not need to be enrolled in school and 18-year-olds with disabilities also qualify for meals.  WAND

  • Attorney General Kwame Raoul warned Champaign residents that scammers are exploiting storm repair needs by pressuring homeowners into quick, expensive decisions and urged them to use free resources — like his office and state agencies — to verify contractor licenses and secure written contracts before paying in full.  WAND

HEALTH NEWS

  • Shriners Children’s opened a new pediatric orthopedic outreach clinic in Champaign at Carle Outpatient Services at The Fields, 3105 Fields South Drive in March. Doctors from Shriners Children’s St. Louis and Chicago partnered with Carle Health to bring accessible care—providing follow-ups, checkups and specialist consultations for up to 64 patients each year.  WAND
