  • In April, Systems Administrator Tim Smith of METCAD received the Tyler Community Elite Award from Tyler Technologies after being nominated by a law enforcement professional who uses their public safety products & his work helped the software meet state and federal crime reporting systems. His recognition comes from both local efforts in Champaign County and appreciation from Illinois law enforcement agencies.  City of Champaign

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sola Gratia Farm in Urbana has turned the land where it began 13 years ago into a community classroom—people can help grow crops and decorate a fence to learn how to cook healthy meals. Outreach and Education Manager Fiona Munro said the site is meant to teach how to make food from scratch—extending the farm’s work with local food pantries.  WCIA
  • Today at 5:30 p.m., the Champaign Unit 4 School District Board of Education will meet to decide on a negotiated separation agreement with Superintendent Sheila Boozer and likely mark her last day. The board will also vote on appointing District Director of Facilities & Services Daniel Casillas as acting superintendent—continuing its search for a new leader via its recent RFP—setting the stage for future changes.  WCIA
  • Champaign’s Central High School is reprinting parts of its yearbook after the word 'Israel' was intentionally left off a world map. Principal Joe Williams said the school will work with its publisher to produce sticker pages and reprints—available at the main office by June 13—for families who want a new copy.  WCIA

  • Champaign County employees will vote for strike authorization on May 27 and 28 to push for a fair union contract after nearly 150 days without an agreement—AFSCME Local 900 President Cecilia Phillips says a 'yes' vote would give the union the power to call a strike if needed—emphasizing that county work is essential.  WAND

HEALTH NEWS

  • Families with chronic orthopedic conditions can now get specialized care locally — Shriners Children's and Carle Health have partnered to open an outreach clinic at Carle at the Fields. The clinic will operate four times a year to offer pediatric orthopedic evaluations and follow-up care for patients in both systems.  WICS
