- ➤ Vision to Succeed will host its 'Roots of Brotherhood' Men’s Retreat in Urbana on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Ujima Retreat Center — the event will feature discussions on mental health, wellness, and fatherhood along with fishing, BBQ, flag football and a tree planting ceremony with registration and volunteer opportunities available. - ➤ The City of Champaign invites community members to wear orange on Friday, June 5 in honor of lives impacted by gun violence as it hosts local events during Wear Orange Weekend, June 5 — 7. City of Champaign
- ➤ Last month, the Neighborhood Services Department held its third annual conference where over 100 residents, local advocates and community leaders met for breakfast and workshops on topics like safety, healthcare access, the environment, food security and housing. The event ended with a reception honoring neighborhood volunteers (city staff provided details). City of Champaign
- ➤ City leaders + officials celebrated groundbreaking upgrades to the Champaign-Urbana Special Recreation facility on Sangamon Drive on Tuesday, May 26. Funded by an Illinois Department of Natural Resources grant, the project will add a safe drop-off area and accessible playground for the community. City of Champaign
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Champaign Unit 4 notified families that beginning summer, all student registrations will require updated residency documentation to verify school boundaries & balance enrollments between Central and Centennial. The district will also launch U4 Connect as a community feedback platform for enrollment reports and concerns. WICS
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ One northbound and one southbound lane on Prospect Avenue between Springfield Avenue and John Street will be closed for repairs starting Monday, June 1, and short sections of Healey Street, between Highland Avenue + Prospect Avenue and between Prospect Avenue + Pine Street, will be closed for five to six weeks. - ➤ The City of Champaign Equity and Engagement Department is inviting community members to help shape local health and safety programs by taking an 8–10-minute anonymous survey (with an option to join group discussions for extra feedback). City of Champaign
- ➤ A section of Hedge Road between Summit Ridge Road and Thornton Drive was closed yesterday for pavement repairs as part of the Garden Hills Drainage Improvements Project; Duce Construction says adjacent properties remain accessible, and repairs will finish by Thursday, June 4 + weather permitting. City of Champaign
- ➤ From Monday, June 1 to Monday, June 8, the northbound lane of Fourth Street between Daniel Street and Chalmers Street will be closed for pavement patching to repair 310 Chalmers Street. A southbound lane stays open to preserve property access (weather permitting). City of Champaign
- ➤ McKinley Avenue between Bloomington Rd and Paula Dr is closed today for a water main installation by A&R Services plus Illinois American Water; the road will reopen June 15 while local property access remains available. City of Champaign
