CRIME NEWS

  • University of Illinois police reported 10 attempted car thefts on campus since April 16 and urge drivers to lock doors, hide valuables, and promptly report any suspicious activity—steps meant to protect both students and local residents.  WAND

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Shelia Boozer exited as Unit 4 Schools superintendent on May 29—Dan Casillas became acting superintendent until an interim leader is chosen. More than 40 community members and former board members voiced outrage at a tense board meeting as they demanded clear reasons for the swift decision and future transparency in the personnel process.  WICS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After Wednesday night's board meeting, the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District will continue its bus services on Market Street and Marketview Drive plus the route on Market Street and Wilbur Avenue to reduce the quarter-mile walk for riders. The update may bring a 10-minute delay on some routes and follows public input aimed at helping vulnerable populations including persons experiencing food insecurity, homelessness and veterans.  WCIA
  • Champaign County workers represented by AFSCME voted Tuesday and Wednesday to authorize a strike if needed after nearly 150 days without a new contract — 96% of those who voted, representing 90% of eligible workers, supported the move. County leaders must now negotiate fair wages and affordable health insurance to prevent a disruption in essential services.  WAND

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District will launch its Summer Food Service Program on July 25 to provide free breakfast and lunch to children aged 1 to 18 through August 11 at its lobby at 201 West Kenyon Road. Breakfast is offered from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and lunch from 12:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. Monday through Friday, with meals served on-site without sign-up.  WICS

SPORTS NEWS

  • Champaign man Scott Dalbey made two holes-in-one at Lake of the Woods Golf Course when he scored on the second hole with a pitching wedge and on the fifth with a 9-iron — exciting the crowd. He later lost the ball in the lake after his second hole and nearly hit a third hole-in-one a week later — adding a surprising twist to his round.  WCIA
