CRIME NEWS

  • On Wednesday, 39-year-old Tyler Kirkwood was arrested by the University of Illinois Police and charged with a hate crime after a month of erratic behavior that included racial slurs and violent threats against an Asian student—he is now held at Champaign County Correctional Center.  WCIA
  • A downtown Champaign restaurant sought help from the city after cameras caught two teens on e-bikes damaging the patio by ripping out plants around 3 p.m. on Wednesday—this incident follows previous vandalism when patio lights were removed last year.  WCIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A bill heading to Gov. JB Pritzker's desk would require insurance companies to pay for tests that check for peripheral artery disease in people over 65 or with a history of smoking, lung, or heart problems—lawmakers say early testing may help lower the risk of amputations.  WAND
  • The Illinois Senate passed a bill to ban forever chemicals known as PFAS from household products such as cosmetics, dental floss, children's products, toys, menstrual products and underwear in a 45—9 vote. The bill will go to the House floor for debate as the state works to reduce chemicals that last in the environment.  WAND
  • IDOT and William Charles Construction will close Anthony Drive between Dobbins Drive and Campbell Drive from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday, June 2 through Friday, June 6—weather permitting—and traffic in both directions will be detoured while access to local properties is maintained.  City of Champaign
  • The Champaign Police Department marked National Police Week from May 11th to 17th by hosting a Police Memorial Ceremony and a Police Department Employee Awards ceremony — events recorded by the Communications Division that are now airing on CGTV.  City of Champaign
  • On May 29, the Neighborhood Services Department hosted a day-long visit by the Illinois Office to Prevent Homelessness that included Chief Homelessness Officer Cristine Haley and Senior Policy Advisors Euginia Olison & Michael Mallory to review state resources. Local elected officials met with Haley’s team & toured local service centers to boost efforts addressing homelessness.  City of Champaign
