EDUCATION NEWS

  • Charles Lee Isbell Jr. has been named the 11th chancellor of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and will also serve as vice president of the University of Illinois System pending board approval. He will begin his role on July 16 with his full appointment starting on August 1 as he leaves his position as provost at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  WICS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Illinois lawmakers introduced a bill that lets schools punish students using AI to bully peers by making unflattering images — the proposal passed both chambers and now goes to the Governor’s office.  WAND
  • Illinois American Water and Shaw Brothers will close the westbound lane on Green Street between Sixth Street and Wright Street today for pavement patching—detours are in place until the lane reopens on June 9 while eastbound traffic remains open.  City of Champaign
  • Champaign Fire Chief Andy Quarnstrom announced his retirement on June 4—he will step down on July 14 after nearly 28 years of service—and the city will begin recruiting a new chief later this summer. This change comes as the fire department prepares to continue delivering high-quality protective services to the community.  City of Champaign
  • Illinois American Water closed the westbound lane on Green Street between Elm Street and Prairie Street for a water line repair that began on Monday, June 2 and will reopen on Friday, June 13—one westbound and one eastbound lane remain open.  City of Champaign
  • Central Roofing LLC (completing a roofing project at 301 N. Neil) will close Church Street between Randolph and Neil from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. beginning Monday, June 9 and ending Thursday, June 12, weather permitting. The street will reopen at the end of each day, and access to all properties is maintained via Randolph Street (ensuring property access).  City of Champaign
