  • Harvey Hodges, a WWII veteran who helped on Utah Beach in Normandy and later played music for troops, will celebrate his 100th birthday on June 28th at the Windsor in Savoy from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.—He is recovering from a broken femur but still plans to reunite with longtime friends at his party.  WCIA
  • A schedule of fireworks displays from June 28 to July 18 is available for the Champaign-Urbana area with major events including Arthur’s Freedom Celebration on June 28 and the Champaign County Freedom Celebration on July 4 at the University of Illinois lot E-14.   • Mahomet will host its sixth annual Soda Fest on June 14 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in downtown Mahomet where families can sample over 100 sodas, enjoy music by Lexi Tieffel, Hometown and Caleb Cook Band, and visit food trucks — tasting tickets are sold at the event and online — while admission is free.  WCIA

  • Urbana’s KidzBiz Pop-Up is held in a parking lot where young entrepreneurs sell products and learn business skills with support from Mayor Williams (who started the event 10 years ago) and over 20 vendors present. Urbana High School student Vanessa Lillard of Nessa's Cookie Factory said the experience helps her improve time management and gain confidence for her business.  WICS

CRIME NEWS

  • Champaign police said a 21-year-old man was shot while driving in an alley near Clock Street on Saturday night and was taken to a local hospital in stable condition—officers found a damaged vehicle and gunfire evidence and are still investigating the case with no arrests made.  WCIA
