CRIME NEWS

  • Champaign Police responded to the 200 block of Burr Oak Court on Sunday, June 8 at 10:19 p.m. after reports of a shooting where a 13-year-old with life-threatening injuries and a 15-year-old with a gunshot wound to the hand were transported for treatment—officers noted damage to a building and a vehicle and are canvassing the area for witnesses.  City of Champaign
  • Champaign Police responded to gunfire at 10:38 p.m. on June 7 near Giboney Street and Tower Street when a 21-year-old man was hospitalized with gunshot wounds after unknown assailants fired on his vehicle in an alley near Clock Street — police continue to investigate and ask locals with surveillance cameras to contact them.  WICS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Central Illinois will hold multiple Juneteenth events this week—Urbana will host a ceremony on June 12, Champaign will enjoy community games and live music on June 14, and Danville, Decatur, Springfield, and Mattoon are planning festivals, concerts, and educational activities to honor emancipation.  WCIA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy (survey of 4,378 stations) reported that gas prices in Illinois dropped 3 cents per gallon to $3.31 overall, and prices in Champaign fell 5.1 cents to $3.19. Prices in nearby areas rose (Peoria by 4.6 cents and St. Louis by 4.7 cents), marking a larger decrease from last month and last year.  WICS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Illinois trustees have approved Charles Lee Isbell Jr. as the new chancellor of Urbana-Champaign and vice president of the system. He will begin his designated role on July 16 and officially take office on August 1 as current chancellor Robert Jones completes his term.  WICS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • IDOT is performing traffic signal maintenance at the intersection of Springfield Avenue and Round Barn Center Entrance (1909 W. Springfield Avenue) and will temporarily shut off power. The City's Traffic and Lighting section will deploy stop signs and have staff on site today from 9:30 to 11 a.m.  City of Champaign

  • Effective today, Adeena Balthazor is the new WAND Sports Director and will work with Jake Bedell to cover sports in central Illinois after Tyler Jachnicki stepped down. She will also produce Illini sports specials before the football and basketball seasons start — adding her strong local experience to the team.  WAND
