COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Champaign County Master Gardeners will host their annual Garden Walk on June 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. across six private and two public gardens where visitors can tour creative outdoor spaces, record pollinators for a local science project, and support education as ticket sales fund outreach — tickets cost $10 with free admission for children ten and under.  WICS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire at a West Champaign townhome on Boulder Ridge Drive near Stonebluff Court around 10:45 a.m. on Thursday morning—residents evacuated safely when their smoke alarms went off and firefighters worked to extinguish heavy flames from the back that reached into the attic.  WCIA

CRIME NEWS

  • Champaign man Zaire Herman, 22, was convicted on Wednesday on four counts of murder and one count of being a felon in possession of a gun after he fatally shot Anthony Miller on March 17 at Third Street and Burr Oak Court while Miller’s three young children were in the car—he had been acquitted for a similar murder less than a year ago.  WCIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Champaign County workers represented by AFSCME Local 900 voted on May 29 to authorize a strike if needed after 150 days of stalled negotiations following their contract's expiration at the end of 2024—union members showed 90% turnout with 96% in favor as they push for fair wages and affordable health care.  The Daily Illini
  • County Asphalt will close one eastbound lane of University Avenue between Walnut Street and Market Street from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting Monday, June 16 and ending Wednesday, June 18—work is being done to remove and replace the sidewalk at 17 E. University Avenue; all lanes will reopen at the end of each workday.  City of Champaign

HEALTH NEWS

  • OSF announced that Urbana’s Heart of Mary and Danville’s Sacred Heart will merge into one hospital with two campuses starting January 1—with Urbana focusing on behavioral health and Danville emphasizing general care. OSF also said the Champaign on-call urgent care clinics on Neil Street and Prospect Avenue will close at a later date pending further planning.  WCIA
