COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On June 7, 2025 the Ridgewood Neighborhood Association held its first all-call meet and greet where over 30 neighbors met with Neighborhood Services and Police Department staff including Police Chief Tyler — they discussed social activities and plans to work with other local groups in the future.  City of Champaign

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A recent cyberattack on United Natural Foods disrupted deliveries to local co-op stores and left shelves empty in Westville, confusing both staff and shoppers. Local stores expect shipments to resume by early next week—while customers continue to face shortages.  WCIA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Urbana native Chris Jeckel lost his sight as a child and discovered acroyoga on a California beach in 2018—mixing yoga and acrobatics. He is making a film called Touching the Sky to support Fighting Blindness and will travel to England this fall to lead acroyoga workshops—helping blind veterans and others learn new moves.  WCIA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Illinois EPA will host a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event in Champaign County on August 9 at the State Farm Center on 1800 South First Street with parking off Saint Mary’s Road. Residents must pre-register online beginning Monday, June 16—choosing a time slot between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. to drop off their items.  City of Champaign

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Champaign is urging residents and visitors to leave fireworks to trained professionals this Fourth of July—officials said that improper use causes over 31,000 fires every year and many injuries among children, and they advised using only legal fireworks with proper safety measures.  WICS
  • The City Council will hold its regular meeting on June 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers of the City Building, 102 N. Neil Street - the meeting is open to public participation.  City of Champaign
  • At the Summer ILCMA Conference on June 4, Champaign’s City Managers were honored for their professional accomplishments—City Manager Joan Walls earned the Special Service Award for her work on DEI efforts while former City Manager Dorothy Ann David was recognized with the Robert B.   • The C-U Triathlon will debut in Champaign-Urbana on July 20 at 8 a.m. with a 400-yard swim, a 10-mile bike ride and a 5K run along Windsor and Curtis roads—registration is open until July 19 with a T-shirt deadline on June 20.  The Daily Illini
