COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Champaign Police Department invites residents to join them for Coffee With a Cop at Harvest Market (2029 S. Neil Street) today from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. The department will add a third star to their logo in honor of fallen Officer Chris Oberheim.  WICS
  • Champaign and Urbana have many parks that cater to babies and toddlers with features like toddler-only equipment, child-parent swings, splash pads, and safe play surfaces. United Way and local partners will offer free developmental screenings for children birth to 5 at several sites to help families track early growth.  ChambanaMoms
  • A two-year-old girl was found walking alone in Hessel Park on Sunday after a 13-year-old noticed she was following her. Police took the child to Crisis Nursery, found her guardian, and DCFS began checking why she was alone—keeping her safe.  WCIA

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 49-year-old woman was hit by a vehicle on Sunday just before 9 p.m. near County Road 125 E just south of Rt. 150 in Mahomet while walking her dog—she was taken to a hospital in critical condition and is suspected to survive.  WAND

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Average gasoline prices in Illinois held at $3.41 per gallon over the past week, as a GasBuddy survey of 4,378 stations found—this is 1.2 cents lower than last month and 39.3 cents less than a year ago—while national prices rose to $3.18 per gallon.  WICS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Illinois Department of Transportation warned drivers to watch for pavement failures on roads that can occur when extreme heat and high humidity make driving surfaces buckle. Travelers are advised to carry water and report any road damage by calling (800) 452-4368 or 911.  WICS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Champaign named Tyler Funk as Interim Fire Chief effective July 14 — he retired in 2023 after a 26-year career with the department. City Manager Joan Walls said Funk will serve during this transition while the city begins a search for a permanent chief later this summer — his local experience is expected to guide the team.  WICS
  • Champaign Park District announced that the Dodds Tennis Center will remain open throughout summer in a climate-controlled space for tennis. Patrons can reserve courts on Mondays from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 10 p.m. — the center will also host a Lunch Club Workout on Monday afternoons from 12 to 1:30 p.m.  WICS

SPORTS NEWS

  • Prairie Fields Park in Savoy will host the Annual Savoy Beep Baseball Tournament on June 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.—the event organized by the National Beep Baseball Association and supported by the local Lions Club will feature teams such as Indy Thunder, Chicago Comets, and Gateway Archers competing in an adaptive version of baseball for athletes with visual impairments; the games are free and open to the public.  WICS
