COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On June 11, 2025, the Champaign County Community Coalition met at the Holiday Inn Conference Center where members reviewed plans for the Black Mental Health and Wellness Conference on September 20 featuring Dr. Tiffany Gholson as keynote and eight sessions on topics like trauma-informed care — they also discussed a new five-year Community Health Plan and received updates from local law enforcement and groups celebrating Juneteenth.  City of Champaign

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Central Illinois has witnessed 46 deaths and six train accidents this year, with the latest in Normal and Casey, as Operation Lifesaver and local officials stress that obeying signals is key to preventing further tragedies—officials urge not to rush near train tracks.  WCIA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the Champaign-Urbana Jewish Federation and the Holocaust Education Center open a pop-up exhibit at McKinley Presbyterian Church on U of I’s campus, featuring 24 panels and 60 pieces of art by Auschwitz survivors—on loan from the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum. The exhibit does not allow photography and is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.  WCIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • University of Illinois Extension said that if a federal budget reconciliation bill passes, it will end its SNAP education programs that have helped communities with low incomes in Illinois for 30 years—cutting services for over one million people and eliminating 230 jobs. The House has already passed the bill, and the Senate will decide soon as Extension urges lawmakers to save the programs.  WCIA
  • The city of Champaign announced that sections of Paula Drive will be fully closed beginning July 2 as part of the Garden Hills Phase 3 Project—installing trunk storm sewers along Paula Drive, Garden Hills Drive, and Cynthia Drive. Local traffic can use Joanne Lane and Garden Hills Drive via Burnetta Street, and the closure will last six to eight weeks.  WAND

HEALTH NEWS

  • Monticello native Sarah Jane German has donated nearly three feet of hair to Wigs for Kids in Champaign as she closes the chapter on Cure ACC— a non-profit she founded in memory of her mother who died on June 27, 2017. The rising Auburn junior now plans to launch another charity to help families facing terminal cancers.  WCIA
