- ➤ Champaign County's Salvation Army is low on canned goods and is asking community members for help; it will host a donation drive in Champaign on July 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.—volunteers will collect cans in the front parking lot and an ongoing hygiene drive aims to fill 500 drawstring bags with supplies for high school students before school starts. - ➤ Champaign resident Shanna McGuire held her annual Hill Celebration gun violence and drug abuse awareness event at Wesley Park on Saturday to honor her brother who died from drug use and her nephew who was shot. The event continued despite recent shootings in nearby townhomes and aims to show the community's positive support—flipping the area's negative image. WCIA
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ The Urbana Fire Department responded at 11:50 p.m. Saturday to a fire at an apartment near Silver-Vawter Streets where heavy smoke was seen and 12 residents were displaced; 20 firefighters controlled the blaze in about 20 minutes with no injuries and the cause remains under investigation. WCIA
- ➤ Twelve people were displaced after an apartment caught on fire at 1401 Silver St in Urbana on Saturday night — firefighters responded just before midnight, evacuated all residents from the building and nearby apartments, extinguished the fire in 20 minutes with no injuries reported while the Illinois State Fire Marshal investigates the cause. - ➤ Champaign County Area Rural Transit System, known as C-CARTS, added three new 14-passenger buses in April and will add four more vehicles soon after receiving a grant in May, ending a nearly five-year wait due to COVID-19 supply challenges. WAND
