- ➤ Homelessness statewide increased 116% while Champaign County experienced a 27% rise in 2025 as experts point to low incomes and high rental costs making shelter less affordable—local organizations stress the urgent need for more support. - ➤ A Rantoul man got an 11-year sentence for unlawful weapon possession during a police chase near Booker T. Washington STEM Academy, and community members say more counseling is needed to help youth steer away from gun violence—especially after repeated incidents near the school. WCIA
- ➤ At about 3 p.m. today, Champaign Police responded to a road rage incident at North Prospect and Bloomington where a driver fired a shot—causing no injuries—and after fleeing crashed his car; police later located the 65-year-old suspect and charged him with four felonies as both drivers were taken to hospital. - ➤ The Champaign School Board held a special meeting Tuesday night when former superintendent Daniel Cates presented a 90-page SPED audit report—detailing 10 key recommendations from a five-month review with community input. - ➤ Champaign County employees narrowly avoided a strike when union negotiators reached a tentative agreement with county officials Tuesday night—ending over six months of talks on a new contract.
