COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Champaign County organizations are offering a temporary shelter for homeless adults during a heat wave at the Salvation Army location at 502 N. Prospect in Champaign—where 50 cots, showers, and limited meals will be available until Saturday, July 26. Residents must complete an intake at Strides on 70 E. Washington Street from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and check in between 7 and 10 p.m. to join the emergency waitlist.  WCIA

CRIME NEWS

  • A 45-year-old convicted felon from Urbana was arrested early this morning on Hill Street — officers responded to reports of a man waving a gun and recovered a partially concealed firearm before taking him into custody.  WICS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ameren Illinois warned customers that power bills will be 20 to 22% higher this summer & costs should return to normal in October. Central Illinois will face ongoing heat in the coming week.  WAND

EDUCATION NEWS

  • For the 2025-26 school year, Illinois students entering kindergarten, second, sixth, or ninth grade must have a dental exam and those starting school for the first time must have an eye exam — dental exam forms are due by May 15th and eye exams must be completed before October 15th.  ChambanaMoms

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The University YMCA at U of I in Urbana will host its 23rd annual Dump & Run recycling event—collecting usable items from Aug. 4 to Aug. 16 with free Saturday pickup days for furniture and bicycles—at the U of I Stock Pavilion. A sale will run on Aug. 23 and Aug. 24 featuring reduced prices and free items later, and organizers will seek volunteers to help sort and price donations.  WCIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Champaign announced it will secure and vacate Champaign Park Apartments by the end of summer after declaring the 29-building complex uninhabitable due to a lack of heat, water, and safe conditions. City officials and township staff have helped residents relocate while a court battle with the property owner continues — demolition remains a future step pending legal decisions.  WICS
  • Atlantic Services will close the viaduct on Logan Street between Market Street and Water Street on Friday, July 25 and Saturday, July 26 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. to complete the Logan Street Beautification Project — the sidewalks will remain open during this work.  City of Champaign

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District warned residents about dangerously high temperatures affecting Central Illinois this week and urged them to watch for symptoms of heat-related illness such as high body temperature and rapid pulse—advising them to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activity—while reminding everyone not to leave children, older adults or pets in parked cars.  WCIA
