COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Champaign-Urbana organizations including Cunningham Township and the Salvation Army have set up a one-week emergency shelter to help more than 150 people cope with a heat wave that is expected to push heat indexes to 115 degrees by tomorrow. The shelter opened yesterday at Strides — it offers 30 cots, meals, and transportation — and will run until July 26.  WCIA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Urbana Tango Week began on Sunday, July 20 and offers immersive Argentine tango classes from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day along with free evening events—today featuring an Intro to Tango Dance at Urbana Dance Company—and the week will conclude with a grand finale social on July 26 at Urbana Dance Company with live music and an entrance fee of $20 if preregistered or $25 at the door.  WCIA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Farmers recently reported that a popular corn hybrid had trouble with pollination—its tight pollen did not reach the silk, and Southern Rust with Tar Spot began affecting crops, according to University of Illinois Extension plant pathologist Boris Camiletti.  WCIA

  • Ice cream bars sold in Illinois were recalled for potential listeria contamination—over 100,000 products from lot numbers 24351 to 25156 were affected following an FDA announcement on July 17. Rich’s Ice Cream Co. has not yet provided a response for customers.  WAND

  • Former Illinois guard Terrence Shannon Jr. was named to the NBA 2K26 All-Summer League First Team Tuesday in Las Vegas—he averaged 22.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 1.7 steals in three games ahead of his second NBA season.  WCIA
  • Two Illini football players—quarterback Luke Altmyer and outside linebacker Gabe Jacas—were named to the Big Ten’s 2025 preseason honors list by a media panel that picked 16 players from seven schools; Altmyer threw for 2,717 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2024 while Jacas made 74 tackles, including 13 for loss and eight sacks. Illinois is one of six schools with more than one honoree on the list.  WCIA
