COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eight law enforcement agencies and the University of Illinois will host a free Community Police Academy this fall to help residents learn about police work. The academy runs from 6—9 p.m. at the Police Training Institute at 1004 S Fourth St. in Champaign and other local venues, with tours, special unit demos, and crime scene investigation tips offered.  WCIA

CRIME NEWS

  • Corey Butler pleaded guilty to first-degree murder—he was sentenced to 25 years for fatally shooting two people at a pop-up party near Cynthia and Anita Drives last year in Champaign.  WCIA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that pavement patching on the I-57/72 ramps in Champaign will start at 9 a.m. (July 28) on the southbound ramp to eastbound and will continue with one to two day closures on additional ramps and a two-week lane closure on the I-57 mainline (drivers should expect delays and use alternate routes).  WCIA
  • Urbana firefighters practiced extra training drills on Friday in hot weather, focusing on house fires and using their equipment the right way & learning new techniques from an out-of-state chief. They had helped at Florida Avenue Residence Hall on Thursday when bricks fell and injured two construction workers, and the victims are in stable condition & another training session is planned within the next month.  WCIA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Free meals for kids are being served at the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District building on Kenyon Road, with breakfast (9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.) and lunch (12:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.) available Monday through Friday until Aug. 11, and no ID is needed to receive a balanced meal.  WCIA
