ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Champaign County Coroner confirmed that 33-year-old Kyle Clevenger from Rantoul died on July 27 after his vehicle hit a train on Leverette Road—officials and the Coroner’s Office are still investigating the crash.  WICS
  • A fire broke out at a propane company on Leverett Rd and firefighters from Thomasboro, Carroll — along with a water truck from St. Joseph Stanton and the Champaign County Sheriff's Office — quickly responded while officials investigate the cause and check for injuries.  WICS
  • At 1:04 a.m. on August 17, the Urbana Fire Department responded to a shed fire at 1706 Wilson Road near a mobile home and controlled the blaze in less than 15 minutes—no injuries occurred as residents had evacuated.  WICS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Urbana Police Department launched its live-response Crisis Co-Response Team yesterday, Aug. 18 — a model that pairs a behavioral health detective with a Rosecrance clinician to offer on-scene support and reduce extra ER visits and arrests.  WAND
  • Illinois has passed a new law that lets schools punish students who use AI to bully others and create explicit images of their peers. The law will take effect before the 2026-2027 school year and is backed by lawmakers from both sides.  WAND
  • The City of Champaign launched its Community Gun Violence Reduction Blueprint in February 2022 to address gun violence and support local organizations—Jorge Elvir said the city stays ready each day while Banio Koroma Jr. of Vision to Succeed reported that working directly with young men is making a noticeable difference.  WAND
