COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Champaign County will host Bike Month events that include the 15th annual Bike to Work Day on September 10 from 7 to 10 a.m.—cyclists will visit 16 Welcome Stations for free snacks, coffee, and t-shirts, with three new stops added and a rain date on September 11. The county will hold the 18th annual Light the Night bike light giveaway on September 16 from 4 to 7 p.m.—free lights will be given at four campus sites with a rain date on September 17.  WAND

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Champaign Fire Department responded on September 7 at 2:21 p.m. to a fire in a dryer vent in a multi-family apartment on the 700 block of S. Mattis Ave—firefighters quickly put out the fire with no injuries reported.  WICS

CRIME NEWS

  • Two firefighters (Lt. Courtney Moravek and Robert Poynton) and an EMT who were stabbed during a call for mental health help were released from the hospital in Champaign; the suspect, Trevor Lewis, remains in custody with his evaluation hearing postponed until 10 a.m. Sept. 10.  WAND
  • A 24-year-old man was shot Monday afternoon along Dublin Street in Urbana and is now in serious condition—police reported two unidentified men fled toward Romine Street as the investigation continues.  WAND

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Champaign's READY Program school is building a new greenhouse to teach students STEM and how to grow their own food. Urban agriculture teacher Ann Swanson said the project — which broke ground on Monday and will finish by the end of this week — will also include a renovated classroom for year-round learning and food donation.  WAND

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a crowded meeting outside the Long Creek Fire Department, more than 40 community members protested the Board of Trustees' vote to end the ambulance service as one trustee resigned immediately—citing cost concerns and risk to the fire protection district. EMS workers were told the service will officially end tomorrow and legal counsel said that only a tax referendum can fix the ongoing issues.  WICS
  • On Saturday, community members and students met at the Channing Murray Foundation in Urbana to discuss rising rent and possible changes to state law to let locals vote on rent control—organizers explained HB3687 and urged attendees to write to their elected officials.  The Daily Illini
  • The City of Champaign announced its free Fall Yard Waste Collection program for residences, with Blue Zone pickups starting October 13—Orange Zone pickups beginning October 20—and the program lasting until December 12. Residents must place bagged leaves and bundled branches on the curb by 6 a.m. on their scheduled collection day.  City of Champaign

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District hosted a car seat inspection event Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at a north parking garage on 201 W. Kenyon Rd.—certified technicians checked installation and informed parents about proper child passenger safety.  WAND

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Illinois football team reached its highest AP ranking since 2001 at No. 9 after a 45-19 win over Duke and climbed similarly in the Coaches Poll—Illini will host Western Michigan on Saturday at Memorial Stadium with kickoff at 6 p.m. on FS1.  WICS
