- ➤ Tuesday night, the Equity and Engagement Department hosted a meeting in Champaign to address gun violence—18 people have been shot this year, including 7 with fatal injuries—and leaders like Mayor Deb Feinen and Police Chief Timothy Tyler gathered to plan proactive steps using the Community Gun Violence Reduction Blueprint. - ➤ Champaign County Bike Month starts this month with free events to help people bike safely, including the 15th annual Bike to Work Day on Wednesday from 7-10 a.m.—16 welcome stations in Champaign-Urbana, the University campus, Savoy and Rantoul will offer snacks, coffee and biking tips. - ➤ University of Illinois alumnus Larry Gies donated $100 million to the Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics to honor his late father and soldiers plus the university will rename Memorial Stadium to Gies Memorial Stadium once the Board of Trustees approves the gift on September 18th.
