COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tuesday night, the Equity and Engagement Department hosted a meeting in Champaign to address gun violence—18 people have been shot this year, including 7 with fatal injuries—and leaders like Mayor Deb Feinen and Police Chief Timothy Tyler gathered to plan proactive steps using the Community Gun Violence Reduction Blueprint.  WICS
  • Champaign County Bike Month starts this month with free events to help people bike safely, including the 15th annual Bike to Work Day on Wednesday from 7-10 a.m.—16 welcome stations in Champaign-Urbana, the University campus, Savoy and Rantoul will offer snacks, coffee and biking tips. The celebrations continue next Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. with the 18th annual Light the Night free bike light giveaway to help riders follow city rules.  The Daily Illini

  • University of Illinois alumnus Larry Gies donated $100 million to the Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics to honor his late father and soldiers plus the university will rename Memorial Stadium to Gies Memorial Stadium once the Board of Trustees approves the gift on September 18th.  WICS

  • The St. Joseph–Stanton Fire Department is asking local farmers to provide tractors and tillage tools for creating fire-breaks ahead of the 2025 harvest. Farmers should call the non-emergency number to register their equipment.  WAND

HEALTH NEWS

  • Christie Clinic is hosting drive-through flu shot clinics for anyone six months and older in Champaign-Urbana, beginning with a session at Windsor on Sept. 25 and additional clinics in Danville and Mahomet. Residents should bring their insurance cards and follow posted guidelines for a quick vaccination—offering an easy way to prepare for flu season.  ChambanaMoms
