- ➤ The city of Champaign invites residents to the Welcoming Week Family Festival, a free event celebrating immigrants with cultural performances, family activities, and food trucks. The festival will be held on Sunday, September 21 from 12:00–3:00 p.m. at Downtown Champaign Plaza—located at the corner of Neil and Main Streets. City of Champaign
- ➤ On September 9, 2025, the Community Safety and Justice Division held a meeting at a space donated by Capricia Whittaker of Y on the Fly—this meeting addressed a gun violence incident at Country Brook Apartments. Community leaders including Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen, Council Members Matthew Gladney, Vanna Pianfetti, Kathy Shannon, Bob Pollett, and Police Chief Timothy Tyler joined local residents and partner organizations to develop long-term prevention strategies. - ➤ On Tuesday, architecture students and professor Joseph Altshuler presented a plan to the Urbana City Council to transform the Rose Bowl Tavern parking lot into a permanent space for events and gatherings— the design includes softer surfaces, vegetation, and a stage while council members raised concerns about losing parking spaces. - ➤ SNC Construction will close the eastbound right turn lane from Green Street onto State Street for storm sewer repairs starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, September 15 and finish by 4 p.m. on Friday, September 19—other lanes remain open with minor delays expected in work zones. City of Champaign
- ➤ The City Council has scheduled a Regular Council Meeting for September 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at 102 N. Neil Street—where the public can attend and participate. City of Champaign
- ➤ The City of Champaign launched a new City Center Team that now serves Downtown—Midtown—and Campustown by helping visitors, monitoring safety, cleaning up public spaces, and removing graffiti. Approved by City Council on July 15 and funded by the Tax Increment Finance District and Food and Beverage funds, the six-member team works to keep our business areas welcoming and safe. - ➤ Members of the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology met with Senator Tammy Duckworth Friday at the i-FAB Tech Hub at the University of Illinois to discuss biotechnology innovation—this meeting followed a $51 million investment and a roadshow showcasing centers across the country. - ➤ OSF Healthcare is addressing rehab bed needs after a report from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board found that planned service cuts at its Urbana location—part of merging with the Danville site—could cause a shortage of seven rehab beds in Champaign and nearby areas. State staff said similar services are available at Carle Foundation Hospital one mile away and OSF is working with local stakeholders to meet the region's needs. WAND
