EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the University of Illinois campus, more than 60 community members gathered at the intersection of John and Green Street to unveil Dean Clarence Shelley Way, honoring a leader who launched Project 500 (1968) and mentored students. Champaign City Council approved the street naming earlier this year (by unanimous vote) and the Sunday ceremony brought together the mayor, state representatives, family, friends and fraternity brothers.  WICS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Registration opened on Sept. 1 for a countywide residential electronics collection event that will take place on Oct. 11 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Parkland College—residents can sign up for a free 15-minute drop-off ticket. The event is co-sponsored by Champaign, Urbana, Champaign County, and the Village of Savoy and will accept devices like televisions, microwaves, and extension cords—longer wait times are expected in stormy weather.  The Daily Illini

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Champaign County Forest Preserves have opened a self-service kayak rental kiosk at Homer Lake to make paddling on the water simple and fun. The kiosk works with an app that unlocks kayaks, paddles, and adult life jackets while fees start at $25 for under 2 hours — children must bring their own life jackets.  ChambanaMoms
