COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Neighborhood Services staff attended the Green Family Home Dedication on September 25 and joined Habitat for Humanity of Champaign County, partners, and neighbors to honor the Green family’s new home built on the site of a former pool donated by the homeowners association. Rob Kowalski highlighted the value of teamwork—City staff had installed siding earlier this summer to help advance the affordable housing project.  City of Champaign
  • More than 60 people from 12 farms helped the Ritter family harvest the fields in Blue Mound yesterday after a promise made on the day of Tom Ritter’s accident over a month ago—volunteers brought their own equipment, provided lunch, and showed support for his legacy.  WAND

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The University of Illinois homecoming is taking place today at 11 a.m. as over 60,000 people are expected to fill Champaign-Urbana with sold-out hotels and packed restaurants, while local police increase pedestrian and traffic safety measures—boosting the economy by over $4 million for frontline workers.  WICS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Illinois Education Association said its president, Al Llorens, died Sept. 26 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He spent over 30 years teaching and coaching—including in Champaign—and his legacy in public education remains strong as IEA Vice President Karl Goeke will serve as president for the rest of the term.  WICS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On October 25th from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., City staff and Keep Champaign Beautiful will host America Recycles Day at Boneyard Creek—volunteers will pick up litter and get a free pizza lunch after the clean-up.  City of Champaign

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Neighborhood Services staff Rob Kowalski and Sarah Tate visited Bristol Senior Residences on September 22nd with the Illinois Housing Development Authority and the Next Generation Capacity Building Initiative 2025 Cohort to learn about low-income housing development. The cohort of 15 emerging BIPOC developers also toured LIHTC projects—Parker Glenn, Hope Village and Bristol Place Senior Residences—to review the city’s support strategies.  City of Champaign
  • A&A Concrete will close one lane on Sumac Drive and one lane on Winchester Drive at their intersection starting Monday, September 29 for pavement repairs as part of the city’s Concrete Street Improvements Project—lane closures will last seven days, weather permitting.  City of Champaign

HEALTH NEWS

  • On September 20, 2025, the Champaign County Community Coalition’s Race Relations Subcommittee hosted its 3rd Annual Black Mental Health and Wellness Conference at Parkland College from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., offering sessions on addictive behaviors, domestic violence plus mental health in the Black church to address unique challenges in the community. Staff from the Equity and Engagement and Neighborhood Services Departments participated to show their commitment to action.  City of Champaign
