- ➤ Trick or treat hours for communities in the Champaign-Urbana area have been confirmed for Oct 31—Champaign, Homer, Mahomet, Philo, Rantoul, St. Joseph, Tolono and Urbana observe 6 to 8 p.m. while LeRoy is set from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Paxton and Savoy from 5 to 8 p.m.—parents are invited to email their town’s confirmed times to update the list. - ➤ On October 8, the Champaign County Community Coalition met at the Holiday Inn Conference Center from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. — local law enforcement updated attendees on criminal activity while groups including the Housing Authority with its YouthBuild program, Unit 4 with a YES recap, the Champaign Park District, Illinois Public Media, and Rosecrance detailed their services. Courage Connection announced an event for Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the NAACP will hold its Freedom Fund Banquet on October 25 while an Illinois Public Media event will take place at City Winery in Chicago on October 26 — the meeting covered a broad range of community updates. - ➤ The Hindu Temple and Cultural Society of Central Illinois will host Diwali — the Festival of Lights — on the Main Quad on Saturday, October 18 at 5 p.m. Families in Champaign-Urbana can enjoy candle lighting, festive food available for purchase, and other cultural activities during this free event. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. Department of Agriculture said that if the federal government shutdown continues, it will not fund November SNAP benefits—leaving 1.9 million Illinois recipients without new food benefits starting November 1. The Illinois Department of Human Services said the state cannot cover over $350 million in monthly benefits and urged the government to reopen to protect families. WAND
- ➤ Lanz Heating and Cooling, Inc. will close Prairie Street between White Street and Springfield Avenue to repair a storm sewer—work will start at 7 a.m. on Monday, October 20 and is expected to finish on Tuesday, October 28 weather permitting. City of Champaign
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Local experts from the University and public health departments are increasing efforts to track ticks that can carry Lyme disease and other illnesses—recent studies have marked Champaign County as a hotspot for deer ticks. The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District launched a surveillance program that has tested mainly dog ticks—residents are urged to check for ticks and protect themselves. The Daily Illini
- ➤ Kellen Brown, an Impact Outreach Worker, attended the CUPHD Justice Coalition event on October 11 featuring a screening of the PBS documentary Discovered Truth: A Healthcare Journey at the Independent Media Center. The event united community members with local vendors Be Smart for Kids & the C-U Reparations Coalition and featured live performances by Jarrel Young & DJ Caleb Mutua as well as an open discussion on healthcare access and equity.
