CULTURE NEWS

  • Champaign-Urbana will celebrate Día de los Muertos on November 1 at the Martens Center from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, where families will gather around a community altar to remember loved ones. The event will feature live music, cultural and wellness activities provided by Carle Illinois College students + a film screening at the Virginia Theatre from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  ChambanaMoms
  • A traveling exhibit called The Courage to Remember opened Monday at Marketplace Shopping Center in Champaign—its 40 panels show rare photos and personal stories about the Holocaust and the dangers of hate. It will stay open until Nov. 1.  WAND

ECONOMY NEWS

  • According to GasBuddy's survey of 4,378 stations, gasoline prices in Illinois dropped 12.4 cents per gallon to $3.06 over the past week. The drop marks prices that are 31.2 cents lower than last month and 30.8 cents lower than at the same time last year—stations charged between $2.49 and $4.59 per gallon.  WICS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Champaign is asking residents to complete a Housing Needs Survey as part of its first comprehensive housing study in more than fifteen years. The survey will collect input on challenges such as rising rents and home prices (a separate survey is available for landlords).  City of Champaign

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Illinois Department of Public Health is observing Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (Oct. 19 to 25) to remind parents and caregivers of the dangers of lead exposure from pipes and imported toys. The department said that high-level lead tests for children increased nearly 60 percent from January to August and it is strengthening safety measures.  WAND
