COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Champaign and Acclivus Inc are hosting community meetings on October 29 and October 30 to share street outreach goals and local hiring opportunities for violence interruption under the Community Gun Violence Reduction Blueprint—events are set for Providence at Thornberry from 4:00—5:00 p.m. and Y on the Fly from 6:30—7:30 p.m. on October 29 and at Champaign Public Library from 2:00—3:00 p.m. and HACC from 5:00—6:00 p.m. on October 30.  City of Champaign

CULTURE NEWS

  • Riggs Beer Company will host its German Christmas market on four weekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas — offering crepes, bratwurst, candied nuts, and hot spiced wine — and entry is free. The market, started by owner Matt Riggs and his wife Caroline, will feature regional vendors to bring an authentic holiday feel to the Champaign-Urbana area.  ChambanaMoms
  • Urbana has turned eight utility boxes into vibrant art murals that brighten sidewalks—each piece created by a local artist and expected to last about 10 years. The Arts and Culture Program accepted submissions online and plans to add more murals downtown and near campus.  WICS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Champaign is partnering with Acclivus Inc. to hold four community meetings on Oct. 29 and Oct. 30 to discuss street outreach and violence reduction under the Community Gun Violence Reductions Blueprint—residents can learn about outreach goals, hiring opportunities and meet Acclivus staff at sessions held at Providence at Thornberry, Y on the Fly, the Champaign Public Library and the Housing Authority of Champaign County.  WAND
  • The Department of Agriculture announced that SNAP benefits will not be issued on November 1 — leaving tens of thousands of families in Champaign County and across central Illinois without support. Governor Pritzker urged federal action to cover the weekly $350 to $400 million gap — and local food pantries will help until federal funding arrives.  WICS
  • Deputy Fire Chiefs Josh Jessup and Jason Rector visited METCAD on October 12th to thank telecommunicator I Deanne Brazelton for handling a series of calls about an apartment building fire in Champaign at 4:10 p.m.+ she asked key questions and gave clear instructions that helped a resident and his dog shelter in place until fire crews arrived and the caller exited safely.  City of Champaign

  • Versiti will host a blood drive at Grange Grove by Gies Memorial Stadium on Saturday, November 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.—the drive will coincide with the Fighting Illini home game against Rutgers.  WAND
