COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Local food banks are asking for donations and volunteers as they get ready for a Nov. 1 deadline that could end food help for many families. Demand has nearly doubled from last year and the Eastern Illinois Foodbank is meeting this week to review budgets—encouraging everyone to support local pantries and soup kitchens. WICS
- ➤ Champaign-Urbana has a full weekend of fall events as families can enjoy activities from Halloween extras to the Prairie Gardens Magical Christmas Open House running October 31 to November 2—local sports and community programs add more options, including a volleyball match on November 2 at 1 p.m. Check event calendars for any last-minute updates. - ➤ On October 25, city officials including Deputy Mayor Will Kyles, Council Members Kathy Shannon and Shauna Clayborn attended a NAACP gala with police staff and community leaders—event speakers celebrated the need for immediate action. Keynote speaker Dr. Janette C. Wilson delivered a strong message urging local work—awards were given to Chief Timothy Tyler, the St. Luke Food Pantry, Urbana Police Chief Larry Boone, and community leader Nathan Dixon. - ➤ Champaign police, fire and equity officers joined community groups from October 24th to October 28th to host trunk-or-treat events that offered kids candy and safety tips. The season ends on October 31st with an event at Y on the Fly from 5 to 6 p.m.—and trick-or-treating from 6 to 8 p.m. City of Champaign
- ➤ Community members in Champaign attended a meeting on Oct 29 and are invited to join a session today on street outreach and local hiring opportunities for violence interruption. The City of Champaign and Acclivus Inc. hosted the first event and are addressing the violence reduction Blueprint at locations including Providence at Thornberry, Champaign Public Library, Y on the Fly, and the Housing Authority of Champaign County — a plan to expand community engagement. - ➤ Ameren Illinois closed one southbound lane of Prospect Avenue between Union Street and Healey Street on October 13 to relocate a gas main—reducing traffic to one lane. The lane will reopen on November 5. City of Champaign
