CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The inaugural Midwest Yiddishfest begins today in Champaign-Urbana at various venues—showing Yiddish art, music, food and literature for all ages. Organized by the Champaign-Urbana Jewish Federation, the festival requires registration to take part. ChambanaMoms
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Illinois Community College Board announced that 21 Illinois community colleges — including several in central Illinois — have been named among the nation’s top 200 two-year schools eligible to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. The winner will be announced in spring. WAND
- ➤ Three major school districts are engaging the public to help select their next superintendent. Decatur accepts applications through Nov. 21, Springfield’s deadline is today, and Champaign will open its window on Dec. 2 and close on Jan. 2—community surveys have drawn over 1,500 responses in Springfield and 700 in Decatur. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Illinois Department of Human Services has reinstated full SNAP benefits after the federal shutdown ended and said remaining November payments will be issued by November 20 — a lapse that caused hardship for nearly 1.9 million residents. WICS
- ➤ SNC Construction will close both westbound lanes of University Avenue between Chestnut Street and Market Street for a storm sewer repair starting Monday, November 17 until Friday, November 21, and drivers must merge into one lane and follow a marked detour through downtown—eastbound traffic and all intersections remain open except for a turn restriction on southbound Chestnut Street. - ➤ The University of Illinois Board of Trustees approved a 10.9% increase in state funding that will add $79.4 million to the current $729.9 million appropriation for the fiscal year starting July 1—this boost will support operations, capital projects, and extra funding for the University Hospital while new research facilities and senior staff appointments are set for mid-November and January. - ➤ Carle Health announced Thursday that Kurt Leifheit will become Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer beginning Jan 1 — he has served as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel since 2011 and helped launch the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.
