- ➤ Cunningham Township and the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District have partnered to launch a new winter shelter for homeless men operating out of the old Armory in Champaign. The shelter, funded by a State grant + local donations, will open this week after screening at Strides and Cunningham Township to provide a safe space before the cold weather sets in. WICS
- ➤ A list of food pantries across Central Illinois has been compiled to help residents find free food services, with details for locations in Champaign, Cass County and other nearby areas including hours and contact numbers—residents should call ahead to confirm availability. WAND
- ➤ Champaign County is preparing for the 25th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Countywide Celebration on January 18th — the event honors Dr. King's legacy and the local efforts for justice and equality. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Champaign Police are investigating a fire at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Garden Hills that damaged its sanctuary earlier this week and is suspected to be arson—residents are asked to review exterior video footage from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on November 19 to help the investigation while services continue in the fellowship hall. - ➤ Urbana City Council gave final approval for phase two of the Total Energies solar project that will expand the solar farm on North Smith Road at a closed city landfill—phase two is expected to produce 4.3 million watts of power to help reduce monthly costs for Ameren customers and supply power to the Urbana Free Library.
