GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Public Works Director declared that the sidewalk snow and ice removal ordinance is in effect for Downtown, Midtown, and Campustown after at least 2 inches of snow fell — property owners must clear their sidewalks by 10 a.m. today or the City will remove the snow at their expense. - ➤ Public Works will begin collecting yard waste from both Blue and Orange Collection Zones on Monday, December 8; residents must place their bags at the curb before 6 a.m.—crews will collect waste throughout the city until finished. City of Champaign
- ➤ The Champaign City Council will soon vote on a new rule that bans camping on public property, with officials saying it is needed for safety while homeless advocates warn it may push those in need further into invisibility. Advocates stressed that cuts in emergency beds and fewer shelter options this winter could worsen the crisis — a growing concern for local community members. WAND
- ➤ Township officials announced that an emergency winter shelter is now open at the former National Guard Armory in Champaign to help residents in harsh winter conditions. Residents are advised to visit Strides (70 W. Washington St.) for shelter information, and township staff will offer transportation from 6 to 8 p.m. nightly while the shelter works toward a $250,000 goal, as it remains $37,000 short.
