- ➤ Two years after a deadly dust storm shut down 17 miles of I-55 near Springfield, piling up 84 cars and causing eight deaths, University of Illinois researchers in Litchfield studied the storm’s causes and are urging federal support for soil preservation practices—no-till farming and cover cropping—to help prevent future events.
